I see the logic in keeping Gates as Sec'y of Defense for a time. But then I'd like to see Jim Webb move into that position.

He is much much more valuable in the Senate, especially since his seat was hard won. We can't lose that seat. For that reason alone Webb shouldn't be considered for VP or anything else. Beyond that, however, I do think there are many other reasons he wouldn't make a good VP.
