Defense Secretary Gates is one of the only good people in the entire Bush cabinet. He's intellectually curious, he seems to have the best interest of the United States and our Armed Forces at heart, and he has done a lot of good things with the terrible situation handed to him. I believe he would work in a non-partisan and constructive way to support the orderly exit from Iraq. His presence in some capacity would also foster a sense of bi-partisanship with the sort of Republicans who deserve to be acknowledged.

Change AND continuity

This might be a good message to help ease the concerns of those who fear too much change (ie, more instability): Maybe be clear about what won't change, too. Given that this is wartime, pointing out what will remain or should remain the same while we sort out the facts on the ground (since we can't get facts from the Bush admin) is probably a good idea.
