Obama has put forth many ideas related to transparency -- negotiations broadcast on C-SPAN, "Google for government", etc. This is unique among presidential politics and should be made a central dimension of the campaign. He should also take care to link it to being fiscally responsible. One of the things voters are most frustrated with is the lack of transparency and careless spending in the government. This is one way for Obama to differentiate himself.

Fiscal Responsibility En Route to a Shrinking National Debt
zdufran 1 day 18 hours 7 min 44 sec ago
Along these lines, most people believe that Democrats are the ones who run up the bills with "pork barrel spending." Obama needs to highlight the history of Democratic fiscal responsibility in terms of the national debt - which always swells under a GOP White House.
GOAL: To show Americans what's really getting done and how.

I believe that while total transparency is a good idea in a utopia, it's not quite possible in this time. At least in the first four years of Obama's administration, he's going to have to really get down and dirty to make certain things happen. And while I agree there may be a benefit from it being televised fully, he may be hindered by that as well.
HOWEVER: I'm all for having consistent televised questionings, like they have with the British Prime Minister, similar to the idea in this Scoop: http://www.ohboyobama.com/Policy/Hold-monthly-Presidential-questions-ses...
It would be a great thing for the president to be televised making more decisions, really getting into the nitty gritty for all to see. It would solidify our trust in him that he's really doing his job day in and day out, while getting many people much more interested in the current events because we'll have access to them. It would allow for more "for the people by the people" types of governance, even if it's just visual access, it's more than we're used to.
Honesty need not apply?

I LOVE this idea!
I don't know about anyone else, but I am tired of the same old smoke and mirrors routine. It would be naive to think that politicians can be completely honest, but the Bush administration makes the Nixon and Hoover administrations look saintly. I am tired of the lies, I am tired of the fear mongering, I am tired of being played like a lost little sheep, and I am tired of shamelessly corrupt government posing as diligent Americans at home while antagonizing foreign nations abroad giving them cause to do our country harm.
A little transparency in the White House would be very refreshing.
Some sort of an accountability center
awparker85 2 days 16 hours 27 min 20 sec ago
I totally agree that transparency is incredibly important. The good thing about this is that it can be a central role in his presidency through his own actions, not necessarily as some particular bill. He could run his presidency in the right way and make a huge impact.
I had an idea of some "Accountability Center" for the Obama White House. This center would hold all of Obama's talking points or "promises to america". These would be bulleted out and easy to access and also be updated as they are updated.
Ex:
- Reform Healthcare
- Lessen American Oil Dependency
- Support Renewable Energy
- Support retooling of American Auto Industry
- Responsibly End Iraq War
etc...
Each of these bullets would be updated as something happens, good or bad. If the bill is stonewalled, we will know by who, when and why. This way, we can hold Obama accountable for his promises AND everyone else in Washington that isn't living up to theirs. This could just be one facet of a larger effort, but it could be incredibly useful in keeping the American public informed and the political process transparent.

Transparency is important, and will be a great part of Obama's administration. But in the abstract, no one cares. No one who doesn't already prefer Obama, that is. Make this point, sure, and use it to contrast yourself with Bush. But don't make it central to anything. It's just not compelling enough.
love it!

this is one of the first policies of obama's that made me want to vote for him. it serves as an insurance that not only will obama do what he says he'll do but that he'll do it right and just because we will be able to check.
unless it is important for national security, why is anything in government confidential?
I completely agree!

I recently wrote a post on my xanga page, http://www.xanga.com/CanadianConspiracy/668004567/political-rant-but-wha...
about the excess spending of the Bush Administration.
Google for Government is one of my favorite parts of Obama's platform, and it is listed first in his Blueprint for Change. Why isn't he making a bigger deal of it?
(My wording below sounds harsher than I intended.)

Transparency is undoubtedly a much needed thing in government these days, and this is an issue I care a lot about.
Space Consultant?
meme 13 weeks 6 days 8 hours 40 min ago
Sen. Obama has expressed many unsupported views about space exploration, perhaps most notably in stating that all the work of human spaceflight could have been done with mere satellites. The voting public should know who is advising him and from whence their influence comes.
Obama's life story

I think that people need to get to know Obama, his story. The lies and miscomprehensions are terrible and will stunt votes.
This will help broaden his audience.

Obama should not back down on Irak. He need to show the link between Irak and the economy. Also, the lack of judgement McBish
Maybe one or two issues
ericn 14 weeks 11 hours 32 min 35 sec ago
B/c he'll be compaigning actively in Florida and Michigan, he'll have to pick and choose issues to focus on. Working on a transparency issue, such as the website that is already in place, could help bolster his argument. http://www.usaspending.gov/ is the website. He could address weaknesses with the website and further improvements to be made in a policy speech. Hardly anyone knows about this website, so there needs to be a little marketing here.
There's no doubt Obama could pull of a Web 2.0 government, but it would be nice to see this website (and presumeably, subsequent others) be revamped to be as snazzy as barackobama.com.
Transparency

A fundamentally new approach to government which relies on transparent, distributed information that informs interactive participation, implementation and performance measurement is a huge opportunity. This issue is in the wrong category, should be under policy.
Key for fiscal conservatives/indies
stone 14 weeks 23 hours 10 min 9 sec ago
Conservatives and middling independents looking for an excuse to vote for a guy who they normally wouldn't (someone being portrayed as a tax-and-spend liberal), Obama's transparency commitment is a strong incentive, and perhaps more important, a legitimate justification for their support in conversation.
Obama seems actually quite sensible and thoughtful on this issue, and it could be an issue that cuts across normal party lines. Everyone of all parties is fed up with government waste and back-room shenanigans. This issue is a winner and Obama is on the right side.
The point of transparency
Anonymous 14 weeks 1 day 14 hours 52 min ago
The point of transparency isn't to draw new voters. Transparency is the #1 best defense against the GOP smear machine.
I hope Obama gets the message. He needs to confront every issue, every controversy and every charge head-on.
And one important thing he needs to work on is understanding how things are misconstrued. The "bitter" fiasco is an example. His response to the controversy leads me to believe he doesn't realize how people heard it. Many people do not understand that he was talking about votes and voting behavior. They do not know he was saying that instead of voting based on their economic interests they instead vote based on their religious convictions, second amendment rights and concerns about immigration.
He chose his words very poorly and then chose his damage control poorly by (frankly) giving people too much credit. He expected people to read the context of his words. People aren't interested in context. They're interested in sound bites that get played over and over by "good ol' boy patriots" like Sean Hannity.

Two areas to focus in governance
transparency and participation
Transparency to ensure that all earmarks and contracts are subject to public scrutiny
Participation to ensure that the groundroots are part of the process. To this extent this site is really the besst thing for Obama and should become an official Obama site even after his presidency begins
It won't broaden his demographics
tralala 14 weeks 1 day 18 hours 9 min ago
Although the idea sounds nice I don't think it will bring him a lot new voters. I guess people who care about transparency are already in his camp. I think themes like his biography, creating chances for everybody, changing the course of the country resonate with a broader audience. I also think he has to win over conservative rural democrats, that's why I think a weeklong poverty tour with Edwards would be a good idea.
Transparency in Gov't is big issue
Anonymous 14 weeks 1 day 19 hours 25 min ago
I have a cousin in Arkansas who wasn't going to vote for Obama due to "funny" name and when I hit him with all the things Obama has done to allow the public to see who votes for what, how much money goes where, etc. he was swayed!
First day jitters

Did not intend to down rate this idea. I fully concur that transparency should be a key issue. Independents will be swayed by an honest effort to reform and return government back to the people.
Change begins with Transparency
thinkresults 14 weeks 1 day 19 hours 44 min ago
I agree - transparency is not the only thing but it is the beginning of everything.
In my activism, it is transparency that makes changing the status quo possible. No matter what we want to change, we must start with transparency. It puts those in power on alert while they're being watched and as they lumber about to regain their footing, we come in to make the change.
