They are the first Americans! They should receive assistance. Not only is it the right thing to do, it also shows up how things haven't changed that much since Katrina.

Continue to point out the fallacies of off-shore drilling. But also follow this up with the simple fact that drilling in the gulf coast is a very risky situation considering the increased number of hurricanes over recent years. If these new drilling platforms are damaged, speculators could use that to drive up oil prices. Could feed off of the Gustav hysteria

Read more »I would suggest that Obama invite McCain to create a joint ad asking for aid in the wake of Gustav, that would run in all of the ad slots that are currently devoted to political attack ads. It would show that Obama is dedicated to the country over politics, and would likewise throw off the McCain attack strategy.
Read more »The handling of the levee situation in New Orleans--both pre- and post-Katrina--has been an absolute disaster.
Gustav was a much weaker storm when it hit New Orleans, on top of that the center of the storm did not directly hit the city and it moved past New Orleans faster then Katrina.

I would show Bush and McCain on the tarmac with the Birthday cake the day Katrina made landfall, and next show McCain going to Mississippi and then Ohio to fill care packages. Then, a voiceover saying something like McCain non-election year over the first scene and McCain during election over the other scene.

If Gustav does a lot of damages remind the people that despite his "change" message John Mc Cain will have the same republican in charge, the same ones that still haven't done the job during the Bush's 8 years. Change is not only changing the president, it's changing the team.
