Social Security & The X Generation: Time to Invest

I’m in my thirties. I’m in it for the long term. The current stock market has me more worried about job prospects than the value of my stock portfolio. I’m confident that the market will rebound again and fall again and rebound again and so forth over the next thirty years.

smart smart dumb

Capital Crossing, one of the most toxic mortgage holders in the subprime field, just paid its preferred stockholders an 8 1/2 % dividend
, then called the stock at the full $25 price.
Its owned by Lehman Bros.
Our super smart politicians are being jobbed by the brokerage and banking slicksters who sold them a bad deal.

BAILOUT REFORM

IT SEEMS THAT THE PRESENT BAILOUT PLANS ARE JUST MORE TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS. WHY NOT GO THE OTHER WAY. Fixing the Economy

If you count all your taxpayers and give them $50,000 or $100,000 dollars each, some will put it in the bank, some will invest, some will buy cars, everyone will pay their bills and mortgages, it would be cheaper than the bailouts and you'll be giving the money back to whom it belongs to.Seems to me the economy would be back healthy right away.

peace for israel and palestine

I think it would be great if we urged Israel to institute a mandatory requirement of 4 years of Arabic language study for highschool graduation.
Communication is key to peace and the Israelis are so geared toward education that this seems to be a very simple gesture of goodwill that they could make to the whole arab world.

How to Save Detroit

I think the US should embark on a massive public works project building a national rail system to help restore the economy, create jobs, provide affordable, environmentally friendly transit for the masses, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Creating a manufacturing partnership with the auto industry to build the trains could also be Detroit’s salvation.

IRAs and Taxes

Policy wonks should pursue the idea of removing taxes on IRA withdrawals. The best way, I believe, is to allow conversion of a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. Penalties would still be in place to prevent non-seniors from making early withdrawals.
