The script can go something like this:

Oil companies are making record profits.

Meanwhile, Americans are going broke at the pump.

John McCain has several of the biggest oil lobbyists running his campaign.

John McCain has given huge tax incentives to Big Oil. In exchange, he's received $XXXXXX from from oil companies.

Lower taxes on diesel fuel. Americans deal with cars getting 25-35 mpg and we can do so much better. Europeans are getting 60-70 mpg cars. Encourage car companies to start offering clean diesel vehicles in the United States. It reduces emissions and consumption. It's certainly a better alternative to more drilling and can be done sooner.

Al Gore said it in his speech in Denver: "The oil companies have a 50 year lease on the Repulican party", and to my ears it was the most pointed and effective attack of the campaign so far, taking the wind out of McCain's energy and economic policy, yet no one has repeated it since.

Senator McCain has been promising "straight talk"

In her speech last night Palin stated that although she knows that drilling won't solve all of our problems that isn't a good reason to doing so. It should be pointed out that while it will only be a "drop in the oil pan" in reducing our dependence on foreign oil it will come with significant costs to environmental health.
