There is no reason why Obama and McCain are this close in the polls. The silent majority is the core reason. Say what you like but they are a force to be reckoned with. They do not picket. They are not on the message boards. They do not have bumper stickers but they cannot stand abortion or gay rights.

Too much time is being spent on the religious right and not enough is being spent on the roughly 14% of Americans who identify as non-religious. Spend some time assuring voters that you believe strongly in the separation of church and state and make an effort to reach out to those who aren't religious. Secular people are probably the largest voting block that is consistently ignored.
