There is no reason why Obama and McCain are this close in the polls. The silent majority is the core reason. Say what you like but they are a force to be reckoned with. They do not picket. They are not on the message boards. They do not have bumper stickers but they cannot stand abortion or gay rights.

I feel John McCain's best bet was to choose a VP from the south, considering there are a few long standing red states that did not take to McCain in the primaries. With a conservative 3rd party candidate in the mix, I think states such as Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana could possibly be very close for a blue win.

One of Obama's strengths that has not been utilized is the fact that he is a young-ish father of two children. This is a part of his personal story that can endear him to voters. The issues of being a parent, wanting to provide the best education for his children, building a better future, etc.
